1. Embrace Self-Awareness.
Self-awareness is the cornerstone of personal growth. This means reflecting on who you are, understanding your strengths, weaknesses, values and beliefs. Take some time today to reflect on your thoughts, emotions and behaviors.
Some activities you can do to start engaging in this introspective practice might include: Journaling, Meditation, Mindfulness. These will help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself. By becoming more self-aware, you can identify areas that you want to make improvements in and make conscious choices that are aligned with your most authentic self.
Journaling prompts:
Self Reflection
Currently, what are your three biggest goals?
What did you do today to be one step closer to achieving those goals?
Are you living in a way that reflects the person you want to be?
How can you make tomorrow better?
What is currently not helping you and needs to be removed from your to-do list?
Shadow Work
What do you want people to feel when they are around you?
Have you ever treated a person in a way that you regret?
What is the worst feeling, and why?
What is your love language and destruction art?
What would you tell your younger self?
Self-Discovery
What three things did you achieve today?
What is your biggest failure and how can you learn from it?
What do you wish more people knew about you and why?
How would you describe yourself to a stranger?
List three triggers and how you deal with them.
Meditation:
Our meditation of choice is using the Calm app. You can download it today and start listening to their free guided meditations, or simply YouTube to search for something that works for you.
Mindfulness:
Be in the present moment. If you find yourself worrying about the future or ruminating on the past, you are not living in the present. Try these quick exercise to bring you back to now.
Square Breathing - Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, and hold for 4 seconds. Do this 4 times as you focus on your breath and clear your mind.
Grounding - 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 method:
Name 5 things you can see,
4 things you can touch,
3 things you can hear,
2 things you can smell, and
1 thing you can taste.
OR a quick 3x3 method:
3 things you can see, hear and feel. (We like to do this one when driving, as this is when we tend to space out a bit and get too lost in thoughts of the past or future).
2. Set Meaningful Goals.
Setting goals is key to personal growth, as this gives you direction and purpose in your journey. Think of what short and long term goals you have, and write them down. Do they resonate with your passions and aspirations? Ensure your goals are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Got a big goal? Break it down into smaller more actionable steps, and regularly check in on your progress. Celebrate your milestones along the way, as this reminds you of how far you've come and will fuel your motivation to continue.
One example LSC would love to share with you is from one of our clients. Their goal was to "Improve their life". You might be thinking, wow that's huge, where do you even start? So we broke it down into what this meant for them:
1. Decluttering their wardrobe
2. Creating a photo wall.
3. Clearing out the Garage.
The smaller steps to these larger goals were:
Decluttering the wardrobe
Open it up, take a look at what you currently have in there, and think about what you've got.
Create Keep, Throw & Donate piles (baskets, bags, or space on the floor!)
Remind yourself, if doesn't have to all be done at once. Every morning, if you try on a piece, think about which pile it would go in.
If you find yourself never reaching for a piece, chuck it out of the wardrobe and into it's throw or donate pile, clear that space!
At the end of the month, evaluate your piles and move your clothing into the garbage or donation centre.
We won't go into the others on their list, but I'm thinking you get the idea. Breaking big goals into smaller steps makes it easier on yourself and more likely to be worked on.
3. Embrace Continuous Learning.
Personal Growth thrives on it's thirst for knowledge and commitment to lifelong learning.
"Anyone who stops learning is old, whether they are twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning, stays young." - Henry Ford.
Cultivating a growth mindset allows you to embraces challenges, view failures as opportunities to learn, and lets you seek new experiences. Try reading new books outside of your usual genre, attend seminars or workshops. Consider pursuing further education. Seek mentors or role models who inspire you and can guide you on your journey in personal growth.
4. Step out of your Comfort Zone.
Growth rarely occurs within the boundaries of your comfort zone. Challenge yourself by taking calculated risks and embracing new experiences. (Yes Man, with Jim Carey. is a great movie of the perils and opportunities of saying Yes to things you normally wouldn't!). Pushing beyond your usual limits allows you to be open to untapped potential and build resilience. Whether it's learning a new skill, speaking in public, or pursuing your personal passion, stepping up and out of your comfort zone fosters personal development as you learn new things about yourself and what you are capable of, and boosts your self-confidence.
5. Cultivate Healthy Relationships.
The company we keep has a significant impact on your own personal growth. Reflect on your friends and inner circle. Do you find yourself held back or propelled forward by their presence in your life? Do they accept you as you are or do you find yourself censoring yourself for them?
Surround yourself with people who are supportive and positive, who inspire and uplift you. Seek relationships that foster growth, where you can learn from others and share your own experiences freely. Be mindful of toxic relationships that drain your energy and hinder your progress.
Cultivating open communication, empathy and mutual respect in your interactions can be difficult if you haven't done this before, but that's OK, this is where LSC is here to guide you. Healthy personal relationships are a catalyst for personal transformation.
6. Practice Self-Care
Ok it feels like this tip comes up in every LSC read lately, but we'll never stop championing the importance of self care. Personal growth requires nurturing of your physical, emotional and mental well-being. Some self-care practices you can engage in are regular exercise, balanced nutrition, good sleep, and stress-management strategies. The body and mind are in this together, and without the right support in one, the other will suffer.
Engage in activities that bring you joy and fuel your soul. Set aside dedicated time for self-reflection, relaxation, and self-expression. Self-care is not selfish. It's the essential foundation for personal growth and overall wellbeing. When you are at your best, you can be your best.
The last word.
